Garfield Noncredit Counseling

by Elodia Collins
Academic Counselor

The Garfield Career and Counseling Center is located at: 1122 E. Garfield Ave, South Glendale.

The goal of the noncredit Student Success and Support Program (SSSP) is to increase student access and success by providing students with core SSSP services to assist them in achieving their educational and career goals. In accordance with the Student Success Act, each noncredit adult education program accepting SSSP funds must provide noncredit students with the following core services:

  • Orientation
  • Assessment and placement
  • Counseling, advising, and student education planning
  • Follow-up services

The Orientation process is provided on a one-to-one or group setting. Students are provided with WELCOME Packets, outlining the Programs and Services available.

Since there is a high demand for the noncredit programs, and the majority of classes are open entry/open exit, Assessment and Placement are provided throughout the school year.

Counseling, advising, student education planning, and follow-up services are provided on a drop-in-basis, or by appointment. The Noncredit Student Educational Plans began implementation as of summer 2017.

One of the highlights regarding noncredit students is that they represent the largest feeder group into credit classes. The noncredit counseling faculty and the Verdugo Campus Student Outreach Services (SOS) collaborate closely to assist students with the transition from noncredit to credit classes. During the fall and spring semesters, Application, Orientation, and Advisement workshops are offered on the Garfield Campus to assist students with the enrollment process. Furthermore, tours to the Verdugo Campus are conducted to expose students to “college campus life”.
