The classified staff development program is intended to provide opportunities for classified employees to attend classes and workshops that will promote outstanding District departments, programs and services, while fostering the creativity, personal growth and advancement of our classified employees.
Glendale Community College CSEA Collective Bargaining Agreement Article XXI clearly outlines the guideline for professional growth and staff development and how classified employees could receive salary enhancement through professional growth.
Why should professional development for classified staff be a priority for the district?
We all can agree that quality of educational offerings and services could be enhanced by the professional growth and development of classified employees. Staff development workshops and trainings provide opportunities that could create a positive climate of open communication, mutual respect and appreciation for the advantages of a diverse community.
Providing staff development opportunities for classified staff will also help in career advancement opportunities and for employees to keep up with current trends. Leadership skills, expertise, networking and providing better support for students and colleagues are some of the other reasons that make classified staff development so vital.
Recently there have been discussions in regards to providing online classes for staff development. With support of CSEA Chapter 76 executive board and Guided Pathways Steering Committee, we look forward to providing online staff development classes by early spring 2019. Online staff development classes will satisfy the need for training for those who those who are not always able to attend training in-person due to non-traditional schedules or office coverage.
In summary, while the California Education Code has addressed the appropriateness of districts in California to provide such opportunities for employees, and due to today's fast-changing educational environments and programs, it is essential for our classified employees be afforded the opportunity to grow as professionals.
