Chaparral 2018-2019: 27.1 Our Wellness

Our Wellness

Be Your Own Work of ART

by Erin Calderone

"Appreciate the body of art that is your body: how it can move you through each day, and how you can build it up to reach new challenges."

One of my favorite classes I took at a community college was life-drawing. Not at all related to my major, (at least on paper) but my transfer school wasn’t accepting new students until the Fall and I had a virtually empty Spring semester. I loved drawing and painting since I was a kid, but especially drawing people. Perhaps no surprise when the professor pointed out that I routinely added more muscles to the drawings than our models came in with. It’s probably a good think I continued my career in Kinesiology!

The human body is a complex and fascinating piece of art. And so is movement. Certainly, we can envision a dancer’s lithe contortions as art, but I would argue that sport and exercise are too. Rising to the challenge of performing near-perfect technique, overcoming the odds of opponent or self, repetition, flow and coordination; all of this is a form of self-expression. A stress-reducing, strength-producing, and yes of course – a physique sculpting art form.

Appreciate the body of art that is your body: how it can move you through each day, and how you can build it up to reach new challenges.
