Soroptimist International of Glendale

Spring was off to a great start for Classified Council as we again co-sponsored a presentation with the Soroptimist International of Glendale.
The event, Human Trafficking: A Local Perspective, was held in February in the Student Center with a full house. Glendale City Councilmember Paula Devine gave the introductory remarks before speakers from the Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking (CAST), Resilient Voices, L.A. Survivor Network and detectives from the Glendale Police Department gave compelling presentations. They talked about the different scenarios that constitute trafficking, warning signs of possible trafficking victims, and what survivors need once they are free. Classified Council will likely team up with the Soroptimists again and hopefully, other local organizations that can share information on real life issues that face our community and students. Vulnerable populations can benefit from a community college education and we need to serve them with empathy and sensitivity. A college toolkit was handed out at the human trafficking presentation. If anyone would like a copy, please contact me.

See's

A Classified Council tradition, the See’s Candy spring fundraiser is about to commence. If you can’t wait until the candy arrives on campus April 3, go to www.glendale.edu/classifiedcouncil and click on See’s Fundraiser to take a look at what we will be selling. Proceeds go toward the Student Worker Scholarships.

Classified School Employees Week

Classified School Employees Week is May 19 through 25 and Classified Council will be announcing events, including the always-popular Bingo games, in the near future.

Student Worker Scholarships

A highlight of the year for Classified Council is the awarding of the Student Worker Scholarships. Keep an eye out for the announcement asking for student worker scholarship nominations in May. You can see pictures of previous recipients on the Classified Council website. The scholarships will be awarded at the annual picnic in early June.

Election Year

This is an election year for the Classified Council board! If you are interested in serving on the board for the next two-year term, we will be asking for nominations in May. Only those with paid memberships for the current year are eligible to run for office and vote in the election. More to come!
