The Glendale community showed a confidence in our college; instead of the required 55% of bond approval by the voters, we got over 70%. We are grateful to community for supporting a bond measure so we can update our facilities, improve earthquake safety, improve access to classrooms for students with disabilities, and do many other necessary important improving projects.
Another important proposition on the ballot was Proposition 55 which was overwhelmingly approved by the state voters. For K-12 and community colleges employees, it was our top priority and it won in every county of the state. Voters made it clear that they don’t want our public schools and community colleges to return to the days of larger classes and widespread layoffs. Thanks to the CSEA executive and negotiations team who did phone banking in the CSEA Field office among our brothers and sisters from other schools.
In addition to Proposition 55, Proposition 51, a $9 billion school bond which will allow the state to invest and upgrade school facilities also passed.
The presidential election was shockingly disappointing for many of us, to say the least. I really hope that we will move on (or be miserable for another 4 years) but we got a hard lesson to remember-VOTE.
Not to put you in a deeper disappointment state that many of us already are in and working on getting out of, but Supreme Court appointment will be one of the most important for us, unions. The Frederick case initiated by a Santa Barbara teacher a couple years ago will go back for a decision in a heartbeat; it could be a life changing decision for us, union workers, depending on who is in the Supreme Court.
In Unity,
