Chaparral 2016-2017: 25.3 Classified Council Corner

Classified Council Corner (March 2017)

Classified Council Corner

by Wendy Grove

Classified Council President

Spring is here and Classified Council is planning more activities for our membership and the campus at large.

A presentation by EOPS counselor Greg Perkins on the challenges faced by AB 540 students will be held on Wednesday, March 22 at 12:30 p.m. in CS 266.  It is open to everyone. There may be speakers from VOICES joining in the presentation as well. We are hoping to sponsor a presentation on student hunger in April.  Announcements for these presentations will be coming soon.

We have one of our biggest scholarship fundraisers coming up with the spring See’s candy sale.

The candy choices, which are three different chocolate eggs, a box of chocolate marshmallow eggs sell for $6 each. The “bunny” box of mixed treats is $7 each. We recommend placing orders early as some items sell out fast.  The candy will be delivered on campus during the week of April 1.  You can place an order with any Classified Council board member.  To accommodate the last minute shoppers, we will set up a table in the Administration Building the week of April 10.  More information will be posted soon at  The money raised from the candy sale goes toward our scholarships for student workers that are presented near the end of the school year.

I am once again asking for suggestions from our membership for possible off-campus activities.  There have been some great ideas including walks at Descanso Gardens and a Japanese Garden/tea room visit among others.  We look into all of these suggestions, see what might be feasible for us and determine if there is enough interest.  Contact with any suggestions for member activities, both on and off campus.

In May, we will have the Classified Employees Week basketball game and Bingo games. The scholarship applications period will be in May.  The Classified Council picnic, where the scholarships are presented, will likely take place in early June.  There will also be Classified Council board elections coming in May/June.

We look forward to your participation in our events and fundraisers this spring.  We could not award the scholarships every year without your wonderful support!
