Dear Faculty,
This is article is a commentary, short, and to the point.
As the 2nd Vice President of the Guild, I have learned tediously about the commitment we all have to Glendale Community College (GCC)! From our newly hired faculty to our retiring faculty, we have chosen to invest our time and energy at GCC, because, somehow, it calls out to us as home, and we take care of it as such. We are family! And, like family, we may not always agree with one another, but we don’t disown one another because of it.
As an alumnus of GCC, I have been connected to GCC for decades, and I have been and am grateful for all our faculty. Most recently, Dr. Margaret Renner, Coach Robert Donaghy, and Coach Joe Agoston have retired and they leave with us a legacy that we must continue. A commitment to improving through education the lives of our student body. This above all else is our ultimate goal. This of course is better accomplished when our faculty have a premier employment package.
Fortunately, we have a wonderful Guild working with our District dedicated to insuring this is accomplished. With our current Guild body, we have hirer wages and better working conditions in our new contract. Most recently, everyone that worked in 2016, should have received a bonus of 1% for full-time faculty and 2% for part-time faculty. In addition, full-time faculty received a 4.5% raise in our current contract, and part-time faculty received a net .75% raise and proportional office hours starting in Fall 2017 (hopefully, we can restore the 4.75 that was negotiated for it).
The take home message is that the GCC Guild is working tirelessly, most notably, President Zohara Kaye and former Chief Negotiator Mike Allen, to insure a premier employment package for all faculty. We look forward to this continued attitude in our new Guild body.
