Chaparral 2020-2021: 29.5 Classified Council Notes

Classified Council Notes

by Wendy Grove
Classified Council President

Spring is usually a very busy time for Classified Council, a time, pre-pandemic, that included the Classified Council Picnic and presentation of the Student Worker Scholarships. We are looking forward to the day that these celebrations will return.

We were able to co-sponsor our annual spring guest speaker series, this year with Soroptimist International of Glendale and the City of Glendale Commission on the Status of Women, held in March. The speaker was human trafficking survivor, author and advocate Theresa Flores. Even though it was a virtual event, the response was great. We had more than 80 attendees that included students, faculty and staff and many community members, some representing other nonprofit organizations. This community partnership helps promote Classified Council locally and opens up more opportunities for future guest speakers on topics that affect our students and the community. We have previously co-sponsored other speakers on human trafficking and hosted a talk on homelessness in Glendale with Ascencia. In the future, guest speakers on subjects including domestic violence, racism, food scarcity, affordable housing and other issues of social relevance are what we hope to offer.

As always, check the Classified Council website www.glendale.edu/classifiedcouncil for updates on events and fundraisers.
