Classified Council President

Summer is over and GCC is back in business for the 2015-1016 school year.  Before fall classes began, Classified Council hosted the annual Classified Institute Day.  It was a great event that included speakers from all areas of the college and featured Erin Calderone from the Kinesiology Department.  She has been a great help to Classified Council by supporting our Get Moving exercise series.  We are also grateful to Dr. Viar for sponsoring the lunch and to the Foundation for handing out gift items to all the attendees.  It was not only an informative event, but also a fun day as evidenced by our photo collage here:

Classified Institute Day 2015

In June, Classified Council held an election for the next two-year terms.  Already, the board members, new and “old,” have done a tremendous job in organizing Classified Institute Day and our upcoming fall events and fundraisers.  In addition to myself as president, the current board is: Vice president Jenny McMahon, Treasurer Patricia Chamroonrat, Secretary Merrilee Ahaus and members at large Olga Tovar, Frankie Strong, Ann Simon, Sharis Davoodi and Angine Aslanian.  We are very excited about this coming year.

Classified Council launched the Get Moving series last semester, which was met with a lot of enthusiasm.  We plan to continue with more Get Moving activities this year as well as continuing to offer presentations and events that are educational and enriching.  Erin Calderone has agreed to once again lead campus walks.  They will begin on Monday, October 5 and continue through December 7.  The half-hour walks will be from 9:30 to 10 a.m. every Monday in October, and from 12:20 to 12:50 p.m. starting in November.  Look for the upcoming announcements in your email.  More Get Moving events are being planned.

Additionally, with what has become a Classified Council tradition, Dr. Wendy Fonarow will give an October lecture.  This year it is "Dias de Los Muertos and the Welcoming Cemetery" set to be held Oct. 28 at 12:20 p.m. in AD 205.  If you have never attended one of Dr. Fonarow’s lectures, you really must.

On the scholarship fundraising front, we will have our annual Tupperware sale on campus on the Library Patio scheduled for Oct. 21.  Items can be purchased at the display table that day or from any Classified Council board member.  We currently have a flower bulb and herb garden fundraiser in progress through Flower Power fundraising.  They give us 50% of the sales so this one is very important to us.  To make a purchase, just go to our landing page at http://www.flowerpowerfundraising.com/i/t/482226/X7TX4Ujk8Hfq.  The sale ends Oct. 15.Fall is also membership renewal and sign-up time.  Current members can renew now. For anyone who has never been a member of Classified Council, we encourage you to join us.  There are membership brochures available on the Classified Council website at http://www.glendale.edu/index.aspx?page=6022.  It only costs $7 per year.  If you want to know more about our organization, please feel free to ask me or any of our board officers.
