Hello, Part-Time Faculty!
“Organizing for Racial and Social Justice in Education” was the theme of the Leadership Conference & State Council held in San Francisco last month. President Haraldson, Gev Demirchyan, and I attended several workshops learning how to build union strength, to support our undocumented students, and to understand critical race theory. Almost at every point, everyone was reminded of the Part-Time Faculty Healthcare Campaign! Did you see the picture of the three of us with the service award the Guild won?
Speaking of pictures, you can find me in the background of recent CFT articles on the plight of Part-Time faculty in the state. Check out this recent essay, “Continued enrollment woes create local challenges for part-time faculty.”
This is California Community College month! Part-Time faculty are the majority of educators in this great institution, and yet we are the most vulnerable. Help end Calbright and support the community college system which not only provides education but also supports the community in engaging activities throughout the year. Continue doing your great work!
May 1 & 2
Next up: the Part-Time Faculty Conference will take place on May 1 and 2 to coincide with a lobby day at the capital. The conference will offer numerous workshops where part-time faculty can learn how to make changes toward equity in higher education. The Guild will be represented!
Flex
On the home front, we are making progress with clarifying paycheck codes and documenting column changes in salary schedule. Remember, your Flex obligation will be due on May 15. You can apply extra hours of professional development to your education credits. Also, keep track of your assignments. These accumulate to help elevate your salary step. Remember, if you complete assignments at other districts, make sure that you get them recorded in Payroll. This could affect the salary step placement for your intersession assignments!
Election
Lastly, thank you for your support in our recent election! I am so encouraged by the active engagement of our Part-Time faculty at GCC! It is my pleasure to serve you.
