Chaparral 2021-2022: 30.4 Adjunct Junction

Adjunct Junction

2nd Vice President, Glendale College Guild

Hello, Part-Timers!

Wow…Since the end of fall term, it seems as if there was no break!

As the statewide effort to provide accessible quality healthcare for part-time faculty surged forward, we succeeded—with your help!—to convince Governor Newsom to allocate $200 million for part-time faculty healthcare. The Campaign Committee has met regularly to continue efforts to secure those funds in the final May revise.

Healthcare
We still need your help! Please go to cft.org/pt-campaign to see all the ways you can help in this campaign. We have another budget hearing on April 5 for which we would love to hear more testimonials on behalf of part-time faculty healthcare. This issue doesn’t just affect us Part Timers; it affects the entire GCC community as the campaign will secure more dollars for expanded healthcare, relieving and alleviating much of the stress caused by the pandemic in both mental and physical health as well as the fear in losing coverage due to reduced class assignments. There are a number of ways to take action, from a simple click of a button sending a letter to testifying at budget hearings.

Part Time Faculty Conference
In conjunction with the campaign, the Part Time Faculty Conference will take place on May 1 and May 2 to coincide with a lobby day at the capital. The conference will offer numerous workshops where part-time faculty can learn how to make changes toward equity in higher education. Please consider joining me at this conference! (There may be funding available through CFT). On the local level, we now have a Guild member-approved opener to begin the process of changing the salary schedule, a first step toward parity in pay. A big thanks to our Part Time Faculty Parity Task Force chaired by Mike Allen!

Credit for Completed Class Assignments
But we still have a lot more work ahead of us! We need to clarify and expedite the process for receiving credit for educational units, for classes taught, and for ancillary work. Be on the alert for more information on how to read your pay check stubs. And, as a general policy, always check MyCalstrs to make sure that you are receiving credit for completed class assignments.

Online Ballot
Online balloting has made it much easier for Part-Time Faculty to participate in Guild elections as well as approve/disapprove TAs and MOUs. However, the Guild will need your personal email for the online ballot. If you have not done so already, please complete the form here: https://forms.office.com/r/Uxk8Np6ZKa. I will be running again to represent you as your Guild 2nd Vice President for Part Time Faculty. Your vote counts!

As usual, if you have any gripes or issues, please reach out to me!

In unity,
Juli
