As we approach the end of the semester, I feel a sense of optimism in the air—and not just because summer is approaching (along with that huge sigh of relief we get after turning in final grades)! I feel it in the vibrant events stirring on campus, the way we are also able to use technology to make meetings and events more accessible to everyone, and in the sense of hope for the future, in spite of the greater challenges that continue to loom over the world at large.
Where else do I see this sense of hope? In the very articles I read for this issue of Chaparral. There is forward movement on the Part-Time Faculty Healthcare Campaign, with ongoing lobbying and robust support (discussed in Adjunct Junction). Colleagues are collaborating across divisions and with their students in exciting ways according to the motto “nothing about us without us”; read about collaboration between the CalWORKs Program and ESL in this month’s Reaching Across: Building Bridges with Colleagues. Classified Council’s Student Worker Scholarships were reinstated this year after a pandemic hiatus (check it out in Classified Council Notes). Union colleagues are connecting and throwing a Guild-sponsored End-of-Year Faculty Party (Faculty United). Meanwhile, governance meetings are still taking advantage of technology in important decision-making processes and communication (Governance Tidbits). Finally, we move forward with the hope that our new leadership will continue to work for the betterment of our campus and community (Senate Update).
And, as always, we’ve got some exciting Milestones to share, along with reading recommendations from your colleagues. I hope you enjoy this issue and find yourself also feeling optimistic as we head toward summer!
