Hello, fellow CSEA members.There are many exciting and transformational events/processes taking place here at Glendale Community College this year. I know the past few years have felt like nothing but changes happening in your personal and professional lives, but those drastic changes seem to be slowing down. You have and continue to support GCC throughout the pandemic with your hard work, experience and enthusiasm for our college. As the pandemic continues, there is still work being done to further support our members.
The negotiating team has been working hard throughout the year on our new successor agreement. This is not an easy task, as it involves looking at the Collective Bargaining Agreement as a whole. This is very important work, as it entails a lot of research on the part of the negotiating team to ensure you keep the same benefits you currently enjoy through the Collective Bargaining Agreement, as well as looking for opportunities to increase those benefits for each member.
In addition to the negotiations to the Collective Bargaining Agreement, we continue to work diligently to finish up the current classification study. This study has not been easy, with changes to the third party and amount of classification job descriptions that needed to be updated, but I am happy to say that the study is almost finished. Once the classification study is finished, we will then begin the process of the compensation study. This study should not take nearly as long as the classification study, but will still need the hard work of some classified staff to bring the process to a close.
Lastly, I would like to talk about the retirement of our current President Dr. Viar. Dr. Viar has served GCC in his role for the last nine years and has helped GCC grow in many ways. Glendale Community College has been voted as one of the most beautiful community college in California, and is currently building a new science building in order to serve more students and increase enrollment. We are also finishing up the construction on the new Athletics Building. I am happy to announce that the new Instruction Building & Conference Center (IBCC) will be named in honor of Dr. Viar as the “David Viar Performing and Media Arts Center.” All three of these new buildings are thanks to Dr. Viar’s work and support for the passage of Bond GC. I would like to take this time to thank Dr. Viar for all he has done for CSEA and GCC over his tenure as our President.
