Chaparral 2021-2022: 30.3 Adjunct Junction

Adjunct Junction

by Juli Wolfgram
2nd Vice President, Glendale College Guild

Hello, Part-Timers!

This month’s theme is Innovations… and I’m sure the intent was to share our successes in dealing with all the changes in our lives as educators. Part-Time Faculty across the state have had greater burdens to adapt to the requirements of multiple districts while juggling technology and shared home/office space with family needs. Part-Time Faculty at Glendale have stepped up to the plate and helped put students first in education, equity, and diversity. But, what innovations create equity for Part-Time Faculty?

Our Part-Time Parity Task Force has already proposed a couple of reopeners for our fabulous negotiations team! Inspired by Jennifer Shanoski’s presentation on how Peralta achieved parity last year, we are moving forward with recommendations that will put us on a track to parity as defined in our CBA. Vote for these reopeners! If you have other ideas or, better yet, if you would like to join our team, please contact the fearless Task Force leader, Mike Allen.

CFT is making good on their promise to put Part-Time faculty issues at the forefront of their endeavors! I will again refer you to the October 29 issue of Inside CFT: Organizing for Equity for Part-Time Faculty. Furthermore, CFT has designated Chase Golding, out of the Los Angeles office, as the new Part-time Faculty Campaign Coordinator. Chase began the campaign with a statewide meeting of both Full-Time and Part-Time educators this past Wednesday!

Know Your Rights!

Winter session is soon upon us. Many of us did not receive assignments because of the decline in enrollment. If you did not receive an assignment, remember that it is your right to receive Unemployment Benefits, even if you only have a reduction in pay. I will refer you to the Adjunct Junction of 2020-2021: 29.6 Chaparral for detailed instructions.

Not much has changed with the application process and ongoing EDD woes; however I would like to remind you to:

  • Never say you are on break. Quote the 1989 Cervisi decision and reassert that you “have no reasonable assurance of employment.” Remember, because we are contingent labor, we can lose our assignments at any time.
  •  Apply the day after the official end of the semester, which is December 15 at Glendale. Benefits are NOT retroactive, so submit your application as soon as you can.
  • Do not list your chair as your immediate supervisor. List the director of HR and list the HR phone number, 818-240-1000, ext. 5921.
  • Appeal any denial of benefits, if you feel said denial was based on misinformation. Also, know that there is a time limitation for EDD to legally collect overpayments.
  • Contact your Assembly person if all else fails. Our representatives are sorely aware of the backlog at EDD, and each one has a direct EDD contact who will work on your behalf.

For our Part-Time Faculty who are struggling with student debt, Student Debt Clinics will run Nov 30th through Dec 2nd to help members navigate the new rules around PSFL and introduce Summer, the free AFT member benefit that can help members figure out the best way to repay their loans. Online Guild Balloting at Glendale!

This will make it much easier for Part-Time Faculty to participate in Guild elections as well as approve/disapprove TAs and MOUs. For many of us, it was very difficult to get to the campus mailroom during its open hours. However, the Guild will need your personal email for the online ballot. If you have not done so already, please complete the form here: https://forms.office.com/r/Uxk8Np6ZKa. Remember, we will be voting on negotiation reopeners to help bring Part-Time faculty to parity. Your vote counts!

As usual, if you have any gripes or issues, please reach out to me!

Otherwise, please have a restful and joyous holiday season!
