Staring Down Fear

by Emily Haraldson
President, Glendale College Guild

Last month I wrote about the certainty of uncertainty during these trying times, so it’s logical that this month, my colleagues and I would be tackling the issue of fear. Uncertainty breeds fear. Fear feeds on our lack of control. Fear can be all-consuming and crippling if we let it take over.

Much of this job as it has been and continues to be is managing fear. I get it. I’m the first to admit that I get anxious about the unknown or not knowing what the next steps might be. This is a drum I beat often, but I don’t have to face the unknown alone. I have two incredible teams of people who are my sounding board and co-problem solvers. When I feel alone or exposed as the leader, I remind myself that there are people who have my back and support me every step of the way. No decision is mine alone to make and that brings comfort.

That said, please know you are not alone as you have the Guild to help you navigate your rights as a faculty member. We are here to listen, face fears, and help you to problem-solve. That’s the benefit of union membership. Having the backing of an organization that fights for you is one that most workers in the United States do not enjoy. If you are reading this and are not a member, please take two minutes to join and fill out our membership form.

Let’s continue to forge on, face our fears, and come out stronger.

In Unity, Emily
