Welcome to another semester at GCC! By now we’ve settled into our semester routines, whatever they may be and however they may have changed in recent times as GCC continues to open up its campus.
As part of the process of moving forward with reopening campus, not only are there classes being taught in-person but many of GCC’s facilities are now also open to students, such as the library, fitness center, Learning Commons, bookstore, the ARC, and more! With this reopening of campus facilities and resources, all students and visitors to campus are also currently being asked to get a wristband at one of the vaccine check-in stations to wear while on campus.
I’m sure many people are excited to be back on campus this semester. It has been a long and challenging two years since we abruptly went remote in spring 2020, and everyone is still navigating how we move forward while maintaining safety measures to prioritize health during the ongoing pandemic, and continue to offer instruction and services in a variety of modalities to best serve our students.
In this issue of Chaparral, we’re discussing this process of moving forward and what that looks like. You’ll find information here about the excellent work being done to achieve parity for part-time faculty and updates on part-time faculty healthcare; an update on the Classified Council’s scholarship fundraiser; a word from the CSEA president about ongoing negotiations; discussion opportunities on the future of remote work from the Guild president; Zoom governance meeting etiquette tips; a model for how to make lasting change to your health; a wonderful conversation between two colleagues; and updates from the Senate about use of email listservs and hiring practices.
