Adjunct Junction: Adjunct Issues Update... and Upcoming

I have been hearing from adjuncts this fall that office space is a serious issue. We realize that adequate and appropriate space is crucial in being able to offer students additional support and resources outside of class hours. The Guild is looking into various options to best support adjunct faculty around issues of space to meet with students, as well as to plan, prep and grade.

Thank you as well to all who notified me about some current office space problems, most notably the non-functional printer in the college adjunct office, as well as inconsistent guidelines in using the Faculty Dining Room. The Guild has notified instructional services about the printer, and they are working on it. For the time being, it is suggested that you print from the adjunct computers in the IT office. The Guild is also working with building and maintenance on the abandoned lockers in the adjunct faculty office, as well as the possibility of getting more lockers for adjuncts to use.

In terms of the Faculty Dining Room, Ron Nakasone assures me that 50% of the dining room will be consistently available for faculty who would like to eat and socialize there. During construction, the other 50% will continue to be used as a classroom.

Finally, you will see that you have a ballot in your mailbox. Please make sure to vote! You are always welcome to email me if you have questions about any of the issues. As you can see on the ballot, the Guild is committed to maintaining support for the subsidized healthcare plan for adjunct faculty and the District has agreed to give all faculty a .75% raise.

There are many issues which affect your working conditions at GCC, and it is time to start thinking about which issues are most pressing so that we may best represent you when we begin our next round of negotiations.

Do you need better adjunct office space?
Increased wages?
Health insurance subsidies?
More job security?
Another step on the scale?
Differential pay for doctorates?

Please feel free to begin talking with me now, so that I can get a feel for your concerns, and perhaps even your creative ideas and solutions. I hope to hear from you!
