Classified Council Corner: A Successful Year for Classified Council - Join Us!

by Wendy Grove

Classified Council Secretary

Spring is a busy time of year for many on campus and it is an exceptionally active time for Classified Council.

May 19 through 23 was Classified Employees Week and Classified Council hosted the annual faculty/staff basketball game and Bingo games. The basketball game, held in the Verdugo Gym, always has a good turnout and lots of cheering. If you missed it this year, make sure to stop by next year. Many thanks go to Alex Leon for helping with the trophy and arranging for referees. His support each year makes the game possible. There are also many enthusiastic Bingo players among the GCC staff and it is a popular event each year with many prizes awarded.

After much fundraising over the academic year, the Student Worker Scholarships committee has been formed and 20 applications were turned in. The winners will be announced at the annual Classified Council Picnic to be held on June 5 in the Student Center. It features the presentation of the Student Worker Scholarships, a 50/50 raffle and a lunch prepared by Culinary Arts. It is free to Classified Council members and $10 to non-members.

Fundraisers for Classified Council scholarships and events are primarily done through two See’s candy fundraisers each year, a Tupperware fundraiser, 50/50 raffles and holiday party gift raffles. Added this year was the online Flower Power fundraiser that gives Classified Council 50% of the proceeds from the sale of flowers, seeds, plants and bulbs. This first-time effort in the spring was successful enough that it will likely become a regular fundraiser and a fall component may be added.

If you are not a Classified Council member or did not renew your membership this year, consider joining us in the fall when we start the next membership drive. It’s only $7 per year. There are no requirements for membership, just opportunities. Classified Council sponsors several free events, but membership gets you free admission to other events such as the holiday party (includes dinner) and the picnic (includes lunch) as well as birthday recognition and lottery ticket. You are encouraged to participate in social, networking, philanthropic and staff development events and serve on various committees. Membership also gives you the right to vote in board member elections.
Thank you for your support.
