Editor's note: Cheryl Johnson was voted in as the new Guild Rep representing the Garfield Campus this past spring. Although new to her position, she is no stranger to the Guild, as she had been a rep on the negotiating team for many years. Cheryl brings a wide and varied bag of experience to this position. As she describes herself:
I was born and raised in a very small railroad town, La Junta, in Southeastern Colorado. My father and his in-laws worked as railroad brakemen and engineers and the men in my mother's large Italian family worked as machinists for the railroad. My friends and I rode horses all day, every day during the summer. After finishing high school, I sold my horses and went to Colorado State University on a tuition scholarship. I graduated in three years, got married and joined the Peace Corps. Our draft board had other plans for my husband, but the Peace Corps managed to keep us in our assignment in Turkey for most of our two-year period. When we returned to the U.S. and the draft, my husband refused to train and was soon given a discharge as a conscientious objector.
We then went to New Zealand after hearing that some friends from the Peace Corps had teaching jobs on the South Island. After a year, we returned to the U.S. and I completed my M.A. in linguistics with a TESL certificate. The law school being right next door to the linguistics department enticed me to spend another three years on a law degree. These were the 1960s and all things seemed possible. I practiced law with friends from law school and with my sister for many years, but I still find teaching ESL the most rewarding.
