As we continue our issue on various legacies at GCC, we wanted to highlight how athletics can be a key to building community and foundational skills for our students. Chaparral spoke with Women's Tennis Head Coach Deo Sy and Head Football Coach Tanner Farwell to get their perspectives on the role athletics plays at the legacy of GCC:
I feel our program philosophy of recruiting local student-athletes within a 25 mile radius of our Glendale Community College campus allows us to build a sense of community. We have the lowest number of out-of-state recruits for all California Community College athletic programs, as we believe in supporting and recruiting our local student athletes already residing in our community.
[As a coach] I hope my legacy at GCC represents a program of character and grit. We want to support young men as they develop into role models and leaders in our community. We want to do things the right way on and off the field, including having self-discipline to make the right decisions. To keep working towards success is where we find our grit.
My vision is to keep developing our student athletes academically, then socially, then athletically. Through this process I believe we can build a championship culture here at Glendale Community College.
