Chaparral 2023-2024: Improving Lives with CSEA President Nonah Maffit

This is the Chaparral, Glendale Community College's campus newsletter for the academic year 2023 to 2024.

improving lives with Nonah Maffit

For this April 2024 issue, Chaparral is focused on the theme of “Strengthening Our Legacy”. This ties in with events like Armenian Remembrance in terms of how we acknowledge past achievements and history, but also how we wish to rebuild the campus for a new future culture at GCC. We asked CSEA President Nonah Maffit how she reflects on the past, present, and future of CSEA at Glendale:

Being Part of a Legacy of Stewardship

Every CSEA chapter president has upheld the mission of the union: To improve the lives of our members, students and community. In 1927 ten custodians – one woman and nine men – met in Oakland for three days to establish what is now the largest school employee union in the country. They wanted to be able to retire with dignity and set an agenda which has since protected employee rights and benefits. Through the years, CSEA has championed legislation that provided paid leaves, participatory governance, layoff parity, etc. It is humbling to be a part of this legacy. At our chapter meetings and at the bargaining table, we have strived to keep our members informed, empowered and respected. We work in different areas on campus and have different stories, but we come together in a member-run union, led by member volunteers, with one mission.

On What Should Continue After Her Tenure

We are related by our collective past, bound by our mission. We should continue to be guided by CSEA’s core values of empowerment, transparency, respect, inclusivity, and innovation.

Coming Soon: Classified School Employee Week!

This year's theme for Classified School Employee Week, May 19-25, is Empowering Generations. CSEA's history and its continuing commitment to protecting and advocating for our members remain strong.
