Chaparral 2024-2025: California Federation of Teachers (CFT) Convention 2025 with Maite peterson

This is the Chaparral, Glendale Community College's campus newsletter for the academic year 2024 to 2025.

California Federation of Teachers (CFT) Convention 2025 with Maite Peterson

Glendale College Guild - Solidarity at the CFT Convention

The CFT Convention in San Diego was an energizing and empowering experience. Being surrounded by faculty and classified professionals from different campuses reinforced the fact that we are not alone in the work we do and the fights we take on. The Convention served as a call to action, a reminder of our collective strength, and the role that each of us has to play in protecting our rights and standing up for the rights of others.

The Convention offered valuable sessions on important topics such as benefits, but this year, there was a focus on navigating the changes in federal policy and direct attacks on education and marginalized communities. Sessions on immigration, LGBTQ+ rights, DEIA, mental health and wellness, and political action highlighted the challenges we face and the urgent need for advocacy. The discussions reinforced the fundamental fact that many of the struggles we encounter as faculty and workers are deeply rooted in racial and gender discrimination, economic inequality, and the broader fight for justice.

Along with the knowledge gained, the Convention also served as a celebration of solidarity. It provided time and space to strengthen the bonds within the members of our Glendale College Guild AFT-2276 who attended as well as connect with our siblings from other locals. It was a good reminder that resistance is not just about struggle, but it is also about joy, laughter, and the power of community.

With much respect,

Maite
