Chaparral 2024-2025: March in March

This is the Chaparral, Glendale Community College's campus newsletter for the academic year 2024 to 2025.

March in March

What is the March in March?

The Faculty Association of California Community Colleges (FACCC) and Student Senate for California Community College (SSCCC)’s Advocacy Day took place on the morning of Tuesday, March 4, 2025 in Sacramento, CA. California Community Colleges' students, faculty, and staff gathered in the capitol to meet with state representatives and advocate for 2025's legislative priorities. This year’s call to action was "Protecting Student Rights!". Following the morning advocacy visits, community members joined up for the March in March. Students, faculty, and staff marched from the park to the west steps of the Capitol, where SSCCC and faculty groups from throughout the state held a rally for students’ rights. The rally featured legislators, students, and faculty speakers.

The March in March specifically aimed to:

  • Preserve education funding and prioritize comprehensive student support services
  • Uphold respect and dignity in higher education
  • Ensure fair compensation and equitable working conditions for all campus employees
  • Advocate for livable wages and secure employment to safeguard the future of higher education and California's workforce

From Participant and Faculty Member  Romy Griepp, they/them:

“I participated in March in March because I needed action, community, and fortification for our long-running & persistent fight against fascism. I found all that, and more. In this shared space, I learned from organizing elders and newcomers, shared my vision and listened to the glorious dreams of others, and ultimately made new allies & friends.

I found no all-encompassing solutions to our problems. But maybe that’s not the true terminus of community action like this; rather, I think the true goal of our work is consistent rediscovery of what will sustain us when the problems we face feel insurmountable, immovable, and insidious beyond measure - hope.

It is my hope that March in March becomes a cornerstone of our every day. Spiritually, emotionally, physically, mentally, even physically how we conduct ourselves so we never lose sight of who we are, where our allies can be found, and why we keep fighting. I’m proud of our work and I look with hope toward our future as a community.
