Here are some of the larger think tanks of various philosophical persuasions that usually have documents and positions on current controversial issues.

SARE (Sustainable Agriculture Research & Education)
SARE's mission is to advance—to the whole of American agriculture—innovations that improve profitability, stewardship and quality of life by investing in groundbreaking research and education. SARE provides agricultural grants and is funded by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture.
Organic Farming Research Foundation (OFRF)
Organic Farming Research Foundation (OFRF) has a very clear vision -- that organic farming will be the leading form of agriculture in America. OFRF cultivates organic research, education, and federal policy that brings more farmers and acreage into organic production. Founded in 1990, OFRF is a leading champion of American organic family farmers. Funding comes from individuals, corporations and foundations.
California Food & Justice Coalition
The California Food and Justice Coalition promotes the basic human right to healthy food while advancing social, agricultural, environmental and economic justice priorities. Through advocacy, organizing and education, we collaborate with community-based efforts to create a sustainable food supply for all communities.
National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC)
The National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC) is an alliance of grassroots organizations that advocates for federal policy reform to advance the sustainability of agriculture, food systems, natural resources, and rural communities.

NSAC:
gathers input from sustainable and organic farmers and ranchers, and from a diverse group of grassroots farm, food, rural, and conservation organizations that work directly with farmers;
develops policy through participatory issue committees that involve NSAC member organizations and allies;
provides direct representation in Washington, D.C. on behalf of its membership to members of Congress and federal administrative offices, such as USDA and EPA; and
builds the power of the sustainable agriculture movement by strengthening the capacity of its member groups to promote citizen engagement in the policy process.
American Farm Bureau Federation (Issues pages)
Farm Bureau is an independent, non-governmental, voluntary organization governed by and representing farm and ranch families united for the purpose of analyzing their problems and formulating action to achieve educational improvement, economic opportunity and social advancement and, thereby, to promote the national well-being. Farm Bureau is local, county, state, national and international in its scope and influence and is non-partisan, non-sectarian and non-secret in character. Farm Bureau is the voice of agricultural producers at all levels.
Farmland Information Center
The FIC is a clearinghouse for information about farmland protection and stewardship. It is a partnership between the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service and American Farmland Trust.
Center for a Livable Future
The mission of the Center for a Livable Future is to promote research and to develop and communicate information about the complex interrelationships among diet, food production, environment and human health, to advance an ecological perspective in reducing threats to the health of the public and to promote policies that protect health, the global environment and the ability to sustain life for future generations.
Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO)
The Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) is the world’s largest biotechnology trade association. BIO is a 501(c)(6) non-profit organization headquartered in Washington, D.C. We provide advocacy, business development, and communications services for more than 1,100 members worldwide. It is our mission to be the champion of biotechnology and the advocate for its member organizations - both large and small.
Council for Biotechnology Information
The Council for Biotechnology Information is a non-profit 501c6 organization that communicates science-based information about the benefits and safety of agricultural biotechnology and its contributions to sustainable development. Sustainable development seeks to balance and integrate immediate and long-term community needs. It helps enhance our quality of life today, as well as to protect, preserve, and fulfill our needs in the future. Sustainable agriculture is a key component of sustainable development, particularly because it allows for economically and environmentally sustainable agricultural practices.
