Access to Textbooks & Course Reserves

The GCC Library is currently circulating print books, including books on reserve. Other options below are recommendations from the GCC Library for access to textbooks.

Purchasing Textbooks

The GCC Bookstore offers a variety of purchase and rental options for required textbooks, including less expensive online rentals through RedShelf.

A list of required textbooks is available in MyGCC Student Portal. Students can also look up their required books on the GCC Bookstore website.

Other textbook vendors include:

You can also compare purchase and rental options on CampusBooks, and read more about saving money on textbooks in College Info Geek's article "How to Find Cheap Textbooks and Save a Ton of Money This Semester."

Textbook Grants & More

Dual Enrollment students, contact the Welcome Center for information about how to get your textbooks.

If you cannot afford to purchase your required textbooks, additional assistance is available from GCC. The following programs provide support for textbooks:

Library Reserves

Many textbooks are on Reserve at the GCC Library and can be used in the Library for 2 hours.

To see if the library has your textbooks, search OneSearch

Need help? Stop by the library or chat with a librarian at glendale.edu/library.

Library Ebooks (Faculty)

The GCC Library continues to examine the required textbook list and purchase any titles that are available online through Library databases with multi-user access. To do this, we work from data provided by the Bookstore, so we ask faculty to consistently report their textbooks to the Bookstore.

We will contact faculty members whose required books are accessible online through the GCC Library

Faculty, if you would like to investigate alternative texts you can use in your courses in the future (including open educational resources, readings in the public domain, and licensed library materials), please contact Caroline Hallam, OER & Electronic Resources Librarian, at challam@glendale.edu.

Reserves & Scanning Requests (Faculty)

Physical Reserves

Faculty may place library or personal materials on reserve for students. To ensure that the maximum number of students can obtain access, we recommend that reserves have a check out period of 2 hours and be in-library use only. However, overnight and 3-day check out periods are also available.

Please submit your request at least one week prior to the date needed by contacting Circulation in person at the Circulation Desk or by phone at x5586.

Electronic Reserves

As of Spring 2020, faculty can request online reserves via the online form

Note:
  • Please fill out this form at least ten business days in advance of when your students need the access.
  • If you have multiple requests, submit separate forms for each individual title.
  • If you requested electronic reserves in a previous semester, please fill out this form again so that the Library can securely deliver material within your Canvas course.
  • The Library will evaluate each request and will prioritize essential materials needed for course work. Note that each request is evaluated on a case-by-case basis and providing online access may not be possible for certain titles.
  • If the Library can purchase an ebook to fulfill the ereserves request, we will do so.
  • Any materials that are scanned will be password protected and securely delivered through Leganto, an electronic reserves tool that is embedded in Canvas.
  • The Library will contact you individually via email about your requests.
