Welcome to Chaparral 2024-2025 from your new Co-Editors Romy Griepp-McRee, they/them, and Aisha Conner-Gaten, she/her!
As the official Guild newsletter, our primary goal is to communicate guild issues, perspectives, and solidify the importance of GCC as a pro-labor and pro-union community. As co-editors of a guild news source, our dream is for Chaparral to be the epicenter of GCC culture for GCC workers, sharing news and stories to foster connection for employees on campus. Our work is made by and for our community with emphasis on real stories by real people. We work to make inclusivity visible by building brave spaces for marginalized and underrepresented employee narratives. Finally, we want to show that union media can be fun, accessible, and informative.
As a campus community, GCC is made of multiple, intersecting identities and histories. At Chaparral, we envision a newsletter that supports the employees on this campus as an inclusive, respectful, and responsive space for all groups. We will:
Connect, retain, and sustain the narratives of our employees including facilities and non-instructional workers at both Verdugo and Garfield campus;
Collaborate with governing bodies, advise on campus climate issues, and advocate for the needs of the community;
Work in collaboration with multicultural campus groups and other campus services to promote cultural sensitivity and awareness in all aspects of campus life;
Promote physical and emotional wellness for a brave, friendly environment for all.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve our GCC community. We look forward to sharing and learning with you via the Chaparral newsletter!
