What is Niche Academy? 

Niche Academy is an online platform that offers video tutorials on key research and information competency skills.

Designed to support student success, Niche Academy tutorials include topics on evaluating sources, using academic databases, navigating the Library’s digital tools, citation formats, and more.

GCC students can get started by reviewing our Research Essentials tutorials, or explore other tutorials on databases, critical thinking, tech support, and much more!

GCC faculty can embed Niche Academy tutorials in Canvas courses or websites and direct students to specific lessons to reinforce essential academic skills. Niche Academy tutorials are especially useful for students in both synchronous and asynchronous classes, offering on-demand guidance exactly when it’s needed.

Niche Academy also provides GCC faculty with the option to create custom tutorials and instructional materials using built-in authoring tools.

Parts of a Niche Academy Tutorial

• Videos in Niche Academy include close captioning and subtitles, transcripts, and settings to slow down speech.
• Writing prompts in Niche Academy ask users to self-reflect and submit written activities during the lesson.
• Quizzing is the summative feature that scores user answer but does not give feedback.
• Knowledge checks are formative assessments with immediate feedback that are unscored and cannot be taken again in the lesson.
