Why Should You Embed Niche Academy in Canvas?

Niche Academy offers many topic tutorials with assessments for your students. If you need to scaffold an assignment or introduce a skill to complete an assignment but don't have the time to cover the topic using class time hours, Niche can help! You can even assign tutorials as an assessment in your class that automatically connects to your Canvas gradebook. That means you can have students complete a tutorial for a Check-in Assignment or as a weekly/modular activity before you dive into your class' core content. Niche has topics and skills that apply across the disciplines like:

• Active Listening (a great starter tutorial for students new to group discussions and in class collaboration)
• Using Gmail (for ESL students and returning non-traditional students who need help with tech)
• Common Sources and Search Tools (for all students starting to do college research)

How Do I Embed Niche Academy in Canvas?

Embed Niche Academy tutorials in Canvas in a module as an activity, as a graded assignment, or as an external link for students to complete as an optional activity. 

Embedding Niche Academy as an Activity in Canvas Modules

You can add a Niche Academy tutorial as an module activity in Canvas. This activity would be ungraded and not connected to your gradebook. Add your preferred tutorial by:

1. Go to Modules in your Canvas course shell
2. In the selected module, click + to add content
3. In the Add Item to Module Name box, Add External tool from options list
4. Find and click Niche Academy in the list of options
5. Click Select next to the preferred tutorial you want to embed
6. Click Add Item to embed the Niche Academy tutorial to your Canvas module. You will see the Niche Academy content listed in the module with a link icon

Embedding Niche Academy as an Assignment in Canvas

You can add a Niche Academy tutorial as an assessment using the Assignment tool in Canvas. Add your preferred tutorial by:

1. Go to Assignments in your Canvas course shell
2. Click + Assignment Scroll down to Submission Type, and select External Tool
3. Click the Find button
4. Scroll down to Niche Academy and click on select a tutorial to embed (note that the tutorial must include an assessment in order for it to show up in the Gradebook)
5. Click Select in the "Configure an External Tool" box. Optional: Uncheck Load This Tool In A New Tab Assign points (you must assign points for the assessment to show up in the Gradebook). Optional: Update any of the other assignment parameters you would like to change
6. Click Save or Save and Publish. Optional: Add assignment to a Module 

Embedding Niche Academy as Link in Canvas

You can add a Niche Academy tutorial as a ungraded activity using the Link tool in Canvas. Add your preferred tutorial by:

1. Go to Modules in your Canvas shell
2. Click + button next to Module name
3. In Add Item to Module Name box, click External URL from list
4. In URL box, paste the tutorial link from our GCC Niche Academy. You will copy the URL from your browser.
5. In Page Name, enter the name of the tutorial or a custom title for your activity
6. Click Add Item to add the tutorial as a page in your module
