How to Check out Print Books

Books can be checked out for free by GCC students, staff, and faculty  from the Verdugo Library during the library's open hours.

Come to the Research Help Desk  if you need assistance with finding a book in our collection. Students, staff, and faculty may also place holds for books in OneSearch; see below for more information.

To Check Out Books:

  • Bring a valid photo ID
    • A GCC ID, driver's license, passport, and Real ID are all acceptable forms of photo ID.
    • Non-government issued photo IDs will not be accepted.

Book Borrowing Periods and Renewal

  • Books can be checked out for 30 days and can be renewed for a total of 60 days maximum.
    • Once the 60 days maximum loan period is reached, students must wait 1 day before checking out the same items for another 30 days.
  • You can be renew books in the following ways:
  • Books cannot be renewed if a hold is placed on the item(s) by another user.
  • Students may have a maximum of 10 books checked-out at a time; staff and faculty may have 30 books.
  • GCC Library is fine free! The Library does not charge users fines for overdue items. users may be charged for lost or damaged items.

Returning Books to the Library

  • You may return books inside the library or at the book-drop in front of the Verdugo Library at any time on or before the due date.

How to Place a Hold on a Print Book

Students and employees can now place a hold on books at the Verdugo Library and pick them up during the library's open hours. 

How it Works:

  • Place a request for a library book using OneSearch. See instructions below.
  • Within 3 business days, you will receive an email to your GCC email address from the Library Circ Desk (librarycircdesk@glendale.edu). The email is notifying you that the book(s) are available to be picked up.
  • After you receive that email, come pick up the book at the Verdugo Library during our open hours.Happy Reading!

Other Things to Note:

  • Students may request up to 3 books at a time; faculty and staff may request 6 books. Students may have a maximum of 10 books checked-out at a time; staff and faculty may have 30 books.
  • Some books from the Verdugo Library are not able to be borrowed, including those on Library Reserve, or in the Reference Help collections. Books marked as "Unavailable" are not able to be borrowed. Books from the Garfield Library are not able to be borrowed at this time.
  • Unfortunately, we are not able to offer this service to alumni, retiree, or reciprocal borrowers at this time.

Placing a Hold in OneSearch

  1. Start at the GCC Library's OneSearch page.
  2. Click Sign in.

3. Enter your Canvas username and password.

4. When you are signed in, your name will appear in the top right corner.

5. When you have found a book you would like to borrow, select Request.

6. The Request form will display. Click Send Request.

7. This message will appear after you have submitted the request:

Your request was successfully placed. You will receive an email to your GCC email address from the Library Circ Desk (librarycircdesk@glendale.edu) when the book is ready to be picked up.

8. An email will be sent to the email address you provided within 3 business days stating that the book is ready to be picked up! To pick up the book, head to the Circulation Desk during the library's open hours.
