Justification of the Work (March 17)

The justification of the work explains why your group is doing this project. What is it's purpose? What does it aim to achieve?

Scenario:

You and your team are employed by a competitor to National Geographic Tours and have been asked to plan an educational oceanic voyage to give customers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn about the wonders of our ocean world first-hand.  As part of this trip, you will make several pre-planned stops at points of interest.  It is your job to write-up a detailed itenerary that includes descriptive information about each of the features/formations that you will visit along the way, incluing any special tools that will be needed to give voyagers a first-hand experience (s.a. sampling tools, ROV, etc..).

What do we do for this assignment?

  • Insure that you final deliverable will meet the PROJECT OBJECTIVES outlined below:
    • Map the bathymetric features of the seafloor along your route/transect
    • Compare their dimensions (depth, width, height, etc…)
    • Describe the geologic setting and formation processes of major features
    • Identify areas with resource potential (i.e. marine sediments)
    • Make a fun and engaging presentation to highlight these features along your route/transect
  • What is the deliverable for this project?
    • You and your team get to decide together!
    •  Whatever format your team decides on,  it should include both descriptive/explanatory text and relevant images.
    • Your report must also include a Works Cited page, consistently formatted using APA or MLA standards. This is best practice in the industry and will provide customers will a list of resources they could consult for additional information.  Make sure to also cite any images used in the report.
    • Indicate the format for your final deliverable:
      • Illustrative Report or Slideshow with Presenter Notes
      • YouTube video or lecture in style of TedTalk
      • Navigable website
      • Series of reels for TikTok, Instagram or other social media profile
      • Other?

Making a first draft (March 19)

For this assignment, you will work with your group to turn your Outline into a first draft.

  • If you are working on an audiovisual project, this may take the form of a script or a raw take;
  • If you are working on slides, your group will submit a slide deck;
  • If you are doing a written report, your group will submit a word document

A thorough outline sets the stage

Here are some questions to consider as you begin to turn your outline into a first draft.

  • Project Title - does it need to be revised?
  • Major sections & sub-sections or storyboard - who is responsible for researching and drafting each of these?
  • Timeline of tasks - when is each person expected to complete their assigned part of the work so that the Project Lead can submit it on time?
  • Designation of roles - who will be responsible for completing which tasks?   - does any task need to be re-assigned, cut, expanded, or otherwise modified?
  • What format will you use to cite research materials?

Criteria Ratings Pts
Scientific merit

Demonstrates appropriate use of the scientific method, its steps, and the role it plays in discovery.

2 pts

Exceptional

Identifies multiple examples or instances of the scientific method in play, within a multi-disciplinary context that highlights the value a scientific lens brings to the project.

1.33 pts

Sufficient

Identifies at least one example or instance of the scientific method in play within an oceanographic disciplinary context.

0.67 pts

Growth Opportunity

Partially describes the scientific method and the steps involved, without demonstrating its relevance to project objectives.

0 pts

Learning Opportunity

Project can be greatly improved by addressing scientific principles/practices that are relevant to project objectives and relate to oceanographic discipline(s).

2 pts

Technical merit

Explains the physical phenomena involved in the project (to include, but not limited to concepts like density, gravity, convection, etc...)

2 pts

Exceptional

Provides clear and thorough explanation in easy-to-understand language with strong technical foundation.

1.33 pts

Sufficient

Provides clear and complete explanation of relevant physical phenomenon, with accurate technical language (where appropriate).

0.67 pts

Growth Opportunity

Gives partial or fuzzy description of the physical phenomenon involved without any technical knowledge.

0 pts

Learning Opportunity

Project can be greatly improved by explaining the physical phenomena involved, with demonstration of some technical knowledge.
