Book bans and restrictions are on the rise in classrooms and libraries nationwide. The GCC library guide is designed to promote awareness about the importance of intellectual freedom and the freedom to read.

"Legal grounds for censorship in America were first established in 1873 with the passage of the Federal Anti-Obscenity Act, or Comstock Law. Introduced by Anthony Comstock, founder of the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice (NYSSV), the law made it a crime to send "obscene," "lewd," "indecent," or "filthy" materials through the US mail."
