Pro-tips for Finding Sources

This workshop will review how to find sources using databases at GCC Library.

Pro-tip #1: Get specific about WHAT you're looking for and WHERE to look for it

Get specific: WHAT

1.1 Focus on WHAT you're looking for: specific concepts / search terms

  • Why? Searching goes SO much more quickly and effectively when you use focused search terms & concepts
  • Use your own interests/curiosity, and/or conduct PREsearch to gain background (examples: Wikipedia, Britannica Academic, Credo Reference).
  • Learn & list synonyms, key concepts, related concepts. Examples, for topic of homelessness:

To find credible articles (from magazines, newspapers, and scholarly journals) use a library database. Some of the most useful databases include...

To find credible books and articles (all at once!) use the library's OneSearch

If you can't find what you need in a library resource, searching on the open web may help (especially for data sets).
