Library Services for Noncredit ESL Students

Whether you're looking for a place to study, need to use a computer, or want a good book to read, the Garfield Library supports students enrolled in Noncredit ESL classes. We offer several services and resources to help you with your studies.

Circulation Policy

Students must be registered for a current or upcoming session to borrow materials from the Garfield Library.
Students may borrow up to 10 items at a time.
Materials have a two-week loan period.
Materials can be renewed twice for an additional two weeks each time.
Students must have a valid ID (e.g., student ID card or CA driver's license) to check out materials.

Computers

The library has 3 internet-connected computers available for student use. Computers are available on a first-come, first-served basis for working on class assignments or studying.

Copying and Printing

The library has a printer, copier, and scanner. Currently, the library does not charge students for printing, copying or scanning if it is done for a class assignment.

ESL Graded Reader Collection

Graded Readers are abridged titles written in simplified English and arranged by book LEVEL and TITLE. Each level is color coded and corresponds to the Noncredit ESL Department's course levels.

The graded reader collection has various types of books, including:

Classics
Popular fiction
Nonfiction
Short stories
Biographies

Listen and Read Sets

Listen and Read sets are books with corresponding CDs that narrate the story word-for-word. They allow readers to listen to the story while following along with the text in the book. The Garfield Library has a collection of Listen and Read sets for each Noncredit ESL level.

Library Databases

Learning Express / PrepSTEP Learning Express Library provides study guides and sample tests in many subjects. ESL students can find guides and sample tests in reading, grammar, and U.S. Citizenship by clicking on the "Adult Learning Center" section from the carousel menu and then choose lessons in reading, grammar, or U.S. Citizenship from the menu.
Mango Languages For English lessons, choose English and then choose the lesson based on your native language from the menu on the page.
Mango Languages focuses primarily on oral skills and offers a basic introduction to a range of more than 60 languages and ESL modules for many languages. Must set-up account to access site content.
Credo Reference Reference books including dictionaries, encyclopedias, quotations, and atlases, plus a wide range of subject-specific reference titles.
Searchable collection of over 500 electronic reference books including dictionaries and subject encyclopedias.
