LearningExpress Library provides support to students working on academic skill-building, standardized test prep, career certification test prep, and more!
Follow the steps below to get started with LearningExpress | PrepSTEP.
First, go to the library website and scroll down to "Databases A-Z." Click on the link.
Scroll down to the alphabetical menu and click on the letter "L."
Select LearningExpress | PrepSTEP and click on the link.
Once you enter the LearningExpress | PrepSTEP database, if it is your first time using LearningExpress | PrepSTEP, you will need to open a new account, which is free to all GCC students. To do this, select the blue "Sign In/Register" button at the top of the page and then select "Register."
Fill in all the fields with an asterisk (highlighted in this picture) on the form and then click on the blue "Register" button. Please note: the student ID and course section number are optional.
Once you have registered, the "My Center" page will open. To go the home page to see the modules, click on the blue "Home" button.
LearningExpress/PrepSTEP has many modules to explore. You can view them on the home page or by clicking on the blue "Centers" button for a drop-down menu.
For example, if you want to work on your grammar skills, click once on "Core English Skills." This will open a menu that allows you to select a skill to practice or test yourself on such as reading, writing, grammar, or vocabulary and spelling. Click on one of these categories to get started. You can always return to this page to chose another topic within a module or select a different module.
In the Grammar module, you can select a practice set, which is a test, a tutorial, or an ebook. If you want to test yourself on your grammar knowledge, click on "Grammar Practice Sets," (highlighted in this picture).
To start a test, select one of the practice sets by clicking the blue "Get Started" button, located underneath the description of each set. To navigate to the next page, click on the blue "2" or "Next" button at the top of the page.
Once you click on "Start Test,' you will see the "About This Test" page. Please read this page carefully!
Also, you can chose one of two test modes: Practice, which lets you take the test first and then see the answers after you finish, or Learner, which lets you check each answer as you go along to help you study. When you are ready to start the test, click on the blue "Start Test" button under the mode options.
Once the test starts, follow the instructions at the top of each page or at the beginning of each question. Select the letter with the choice you think best answers the question or prompt.
If you are in learner mode, once you chose an answer, you can check it by clicking on "Check Answer."
And then you'll see the correct answer and the grammatical rule it follows.
Once you answer the last question, click the blue "Score My Test" button a the top of the page. You will know the test is completed once the blue "Next" button turns gray. You can also stop the test early and return to it at another time by clicking the blue "Finish Later" button at the top.
A "Score My Test" box will pop-up. Click on the blue "Score" button to continue.
This page shows you your final score plus gives you a summary of the score for each section. You can review your answers by clicking on the blue "View Answers" button next to your total score.
At the bottom of the page (above, #4), you can also see recommendations for further practice to improve your grammar skills. If you click on one of these links, you will be redirected to a new page.
If you click on "View Answers" (above, #2), another pop-up will display and you can jump to a specific question to see the grammatical rule explained.
Another blue button, "View Score Report," will navigate back to your score report page.
From this page or your score report, you can go back to the home page by clicking on the home button on the blue menu bar at the top of the page. Now you can chose another skill to work on or another module to explore.
To see your overall progress, go to "My Center" by hovering the cursor over your name in the blue menu bar. You will see a drop-down menu. Select "My Center." You can also select "user settings" or log out of LearningExpress | PrepSTEP.
