What is Human Resources or HR?

Human resources, or HR, may be used to describe different things in organizational culture:

  • the department that manages and supports personnel in a business
  • the set of people who make up the workforce of an organization, business sector, industry, or economy. Organizations may also use the term "human capital" to discuss the skills and knowledge these individuals have

Human resource management is a term used in the United States since the 1980s that more closely describes the "contemporary approach to managing employees through a series of principles, policies, and practices that center on the individual employee as an organizational resource and investment."
