APA 7: Guiding Principles

Here are some examples of how to format both an in-text citation and reference using APA 7th Edition. All examples are adopted from the GCC Library's APA Style for References, 7th Edition: A Brief Guide.*

Source Type Example Reference Citation Example In-Text Citation
Book, 1 author Adams, D. (2004). The hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy. Harmony Books (Adams, 2004)
Scholarly Journal w/ DOI from a database Frakt, A. B., & Carroll, A. E. (2013). Sound policy trumps politics: States should expand      Medicaid. Journal of Health Politics, Policy & Law, 38(1), 165-178. 03616878-1898839 (Frakt & Carroll, 2013)
Web page Fried, D. & Polyakova, A. (2018). Democratic defense against disinformation. Atlantic Council. Against _Disinofrmation_FINAL.pdf (Fried & Polyakova, 2018)

For sources with three or more authors, format your in-text citation like this:

(Nager et al., 2016)

You can also format an in-text citation by writing the author's name in a signal phrase and then putting the date in parenthesis:

Nager et al. (2016) write . . .

The data reported by Fried & Polyakova (2018) shows . . .

Adams (2004) highlights . . .

* For your paper, reference citations should be double-spaced with a hanging indentation.
