But in the process, are they building data empires and colonising the internet?

And all these have an impact - they could mean big money for corporations, a big story going viral or big votes for a political party. Many times though, the impact can be much grimmer: hate speech, lynchings, even deaths.
Unique algorithmic measurements of us that are revolutionising the process of identification. But biometrics are far from perfect - their convenience and seeming infallibility comes at a price - most crucially, our privacy.
