How Are CCCs Different From Other Higher Ed Jobs?

Priorities Are Different ​

#1   Focus is on Teaching and Student Impact ​

#2   Job/Role Responsibilities in the Library ​

#3   Supporting the Campus 

  • Participation in Governance ​

  • Collaborations inside, outside, and across library districts with Staff, Faculty, Administration, Governance, Community at Large ​

  •  Library Advocacy & Increasing Interest in Information Literacy ​

  • Generally, you do not need to have a publication or conference presentation to be successful ​

  • Highly competitive and saturated in California​

  • Small staffing despite frequently large student bodies with varied and diverse responsibilities​

General Areas of CCC Libraries

Technical Services  ​

  • Management and effectiveness of ALMA-PrimoVE platform (used by all California Higher Education Libraries) ​

  • Cataloging​

  • Analytics ​

  • Circulation/Access Services Acquisition​

  • Digital Reserves

 Instruction / Pedagogy 

  • Teaching in the classroom (E.G. LIS course, one-shots, workshops, etc.)​

  • Collaborating with faculty on supporting research assignments ​

  • Finding and executing opportunities for information literacy/competency 

Reference / Research Support ​

  • Generally, all librarians conduct reference interactions​

  • Familiarity with chat reference, research consultations, or appointments

Collection Development / Electronic Resources / OER

  • Responsible for acquisition of materials (Books/eBooks/eResources/OER*)​

  • Collaborating with faculty and staff to purchase or weed materials to support instruction​

  • Working alongside Tech Services to manage access of the collections​

  • Managing access through both AlmaPrimoVE and/or LibGuides ​
    of materials​

  • OER focuses on faculty collaboration, advocacy, ​
    and grant funding 

Reference / Research Support ​

  • Generally, all librarians conduct reference interactions ​

  • Familiarity with chat reference, research consultations, or appointments 

Other (e.g. OER, Outreach, Web Services) ​

  • OER is a common position focusing on faculty collaboration, advocacy, ​
    and grant funding ​

  • Outreach focuses on library programming, managing social ​
    media channels, facilitating student and faculty collaborations, and planning events ​

  • Archives and Special Collections​

  • Assessment​

  • DEIA, Speciality Programs​

  • Maintains, updates and assesses the Library’s web presence. May work with Primo/VE.
