English 191 - WRITING WORKSHOP II - Zimbler

descriptive paragagraph

Your second out of class writing assignment will be a description paragraph.Your topic may be chosen from the list provided on pg.125 of Foundations First. If you have an idea for another topic, you must get my approval for it first.

Your goal here is to paint a picture for the reader so that you do not simply tell us what something or someone appeared like. Rather you want to show us with descriptive language and make us feel as if we are there. This requires you to appeal to not only visual sensations but also of smell, taste, and feel.

As always you must have a strong topic sentence which clearly states who or what you will be describing. The topic sentence may also create a dominant impression, or mood of the piece, which the rest of the paragraph will reinforce. And your concluding statement will of course, sum up the main idea of the topic sentence.

Use transitional words and phrases like the ones listed on p.122 in Foundations First. Also, a descriptive essay necessitates descriptive adjectives and adverbs. Words such as good, bad, pretty, ugly, nice, great ,etc. are generic and uninspired. Use language that is lively and specific. this will make your paragraph more interesting and will help to create a picture of the topic in the audience’s mind.
