Scope of Your Research Topic

STEP 1:
Because of the scope of studying the discipline of Central America and the Caribbean is so vast and encompasses numerous countries, locations, and territories, you will begin your research by choosing a location to focus on. You have many choices and the flexibility to select a location that appeals to you. The location will be the main concept (C1) you will be using as a keyword.

Country/Location List

  • "Puerto Rico"

STEP 2:

Select a secondary concept (C2) that will be meaningful/relevant to the location you have chosen above. For example, consider the following terms. You are not committed to the term. You may want to modify your key term as you do your research. You may also want to add a third concept (C3) if you find it helps you narrow to more relevant results. Pair your location to a second concept below that makes sense and is interesting to you.

Word about Specificity in Searching

  • The secondary concepts listed above contain very generic terms. You may select more specific terms like "The Good Neighbor Policy", specific treaties, Sandinistas, specific names of people, counter-revolutionaries, etc.
  • Background information will help you form a healthy list of topics/concepts to explore.
  • Professor Torres is an important resource for you to help with refining your research topic. He is your area expert. Use him!
