Political Science 101: Huezo

It's important to distinguish between different types of content found in sources of news to avoid confusion or bias. News is a factual report of events, simply explaining what happened without interpretation. Analysis goes a step further by not only discussing what happened but also exploring why it happened, offering context and drawing conclusions based on the facts. Opinion, on the other hand, is a personal perspective on the event, sharing what the writer thinks about it and why they believe it's important

Opinion: What I think about what happened.

"Newspapers of record" are national newspapers that have a longstanding reputation for accurate reporting and a commitment to presenting a wide range of perspectives on important issues. They are called "newspapers of record" because they aim to be the best possible record for what happened in the nation on a given day (Caulfield 2021).

The library provides online access to the most recent issues of three national newspapers of record:

• The New York Times (GCC Library also offers access to NYT.com. See instructions here)
• The Wall Street Journal (past 30 days also available in print at the Verdugo Library)
• The Washington Post

As well as online access to other major US newspapers:

• Boston Globe
• The Chicago Tribune
• The Los Angeles Times (past 30 days also available in print at the Verdugo Library)
