Hello, Part-Time Faculty!
Part-Time Faculty Healthcare! Across the state, part-time faculty have the opportunity to make significant gains in access to healthcare. Each district can now begin to negotiate how it can receive up to 100% reimbursement for the cost of Part-Time Faculty Healthcare. This not only means that GCC part-time faculty would have access to similar plans as our full-time faculty at the same no cost, but it also means substantial savings to the district for costs normally incurred for providing those plans. It’s a win-win!
Please support the negotiations team by signing The Petition to the GCC District Administration and Elected Board of Trustees!
Speaking of petitions, the sad news is that AB 1856 was once again vetoed by Governor Newsom. He wants to wait and see how successful the Part-Time Faculty Healthcare program will be across the state. Don’t worry! CFT, FACCC, and others will not forget about how important it is to increase workload caps. We are already planning to reintroduce the proposal for future legislators.
On many occasions, I have heard from GCC part-time faculty how upset they were to learn that they would lose monies they thought were available for retirement. Among recent issues that will affect part-time faculty at GCC include the repeal of the WEP/GPO. The bill to repeal Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) & Government Pension Offset (GPO) advanced out of the House Ways & Means Committee in September.
However, opposition to the repeal is mounting. We need you to sign the petition supporting the bill to repeal WEP/GPO!
CFT has a wonderful website that provides the union’s recommendations for local ballots. All you need to do is type in your address to see those candidates and propositions that support education. Please share the Educators Choice with friends and family!
What’s ahead? Campus Equity Week is officially October 24-28. However, I will be stretching out the scheduling of workshops and events as activities promoting Part-Time Faculty Healthcare are planned. There will be presentations on the changes in Retirement and Unemployment Benefits.
And don’t forget! John Lynch and the Adjunct Lounge will again sponsor our regular once-a-semester Part-Time Faculty Guild informational meeting on Friday, November 4, from 3 to 5 pm. Once again, it will be on Zoom and a link will be sent out so that everyone can join us!
