Chaparral 2022-2023: 31.4 OUR Wellness

OUR Wellness

by Jason Plourde

This issue’s theme is DEIA (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility). I never thought to apply this to the OUR Wellness program, because I thought we already did. I started to dive into it a little more and take a look at each one of those words to see how the OUR Wellness Program stands. Here is the article that got me thinking: The Importance of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Fitness (afaa.com).

Diversity – embracing a variety of individuals. I think we do a great job with this. We take all comers and wish we had more! One thing about wellness programs is that they are always looking to get more people involved. We started the Wellness Advocate program this semester. We are hoping that it will get more people involved in the OUR Wellness Program offerings.

Equity – leveling the playing field. This typically refers to costs to the consumer. Great news for everyone, there is no cost to the Faculty/Staff to partake in the offerings.

Inclusion – ensuring a sense of belonging. I think we do a great job with this. For example, the people that come to the Fitness Center really enjoy themselves. But, I also understand why people don’t come. The Fitness Center can be a scary place if you’ve never worked out before. We can help you lay those fear to rest. Myself (during the Faculty/Staff Hours), or any of the coaches (during student hours), can get you set up with a fitness program that works best for you. And it doesn’t have to be about losing weight, or toning up, or lifting more weight than before. It’s just about getting you active. It’s also a great time to mingle with colleagues in a more laid back setting.

Accessibility – being easy to obtain or use. This is the difficult one for the OUR Wellness Program. With so many Faculty and Staff members working many different hours, it can be difficult for everyone to have access to everything at the same time. We do our best at providing a variety of offerings that can be done in different modalities. We are trying out best, but it’s hard to make everyone happy all the time. Someone recently told me “you aren’t pizza”! I had to think about that for a second, and then realized that pizza makes everyone happy. Below you will find the Spring offerings, hopefully there’s a slice of pizza in there for everyone!
