Chaparral 2022-2023: 31.6 Letter from the Editor

Letter from the Editor

by Joanna Parypinski

I can't believe it was six years ago that I took on the mantle of Chaparral editor. It was my second year full-time at GCC, and I feel like I had no idea what I was doing. But I was immediately welcomed by everyone involved in the newsletter, and I like to think my vision of Chaparral as a place to not only get vital information from across campus, but also where everyone in our community can make their voices heard, has manifested over the last few years.

This is my last issue as editor. I feel it is time for me to step down and let someone else, with their own ideas and vision, take the helm. It’s been an honor and a pleasure to be part of this excellent avenue for communication, and I hope that these last six years of our newsletter—through strange and turbulent times!—have provided a bit of brightness, inspiration, and conversation for everyone who has taken the time to read it.

Thank you word in multi languagesI want to give special thanks to all the columnists I’ve worked with, past and present: Emily Haraldson, Roger Dickes, Terry Flexser, Wendy Grove, Juli Wolfgram, Andres Cruz, Julie Gamberg, Sandy Somo, Jason Plourde, Frankie Strong, Narbeh Nazari, Roger Bowerman, Piper Rooney, Brian Reff, Krista Raimondo, James Keshavarz, Erin Calderone, Lyn Ribisi, Harriet Cohen, Saodat Aziskhanova, as well as anyone else who has contributed to the newsletter during my time as editor. And extra-special thanks to my partner in crime, Patricia Chamroonrat, who has been designing Chaparral since well before I joined. The reason Chaparral looks so good and is so easy to navigate is all because of her, so please thank her for all her amazing work if you see her on campus!

That’s probably enough out of me. So, what can you find in this issue?

  • Farewells from multiple people who are moving on from their current positions
  • A look at Garfield’s contributions to the recent Innovation Expo
  • Rights and benefits in Adjunct Junction
  • Pickleball and wellness advocacy in OUR Wellness
  • Building Bridges across campus
  • And, of course, your milestones and what you’ve been reading!

Thank you for making my experience as editor such a great one! Here’s to many more years of Chaparral and to those who take over its digital pages from here.

Happy reading,

Joanna Parypinski
