Paragraph to Essay by Davina Ramirez is a complete writing packet that can be used for level 3 writing (ESL 133). This book covers different aspects of writing with a focus on essays. This book has 11 sections that are equivalent to 11 chapter or units. Section 1 which is the intro consists of practical information/reviews of writing/grammar basics which is very helpful. The author even included classroom words and behavior in section 1 which I believe are essential. Explanations are thorough and easy to follow. Using examples and explanations even at the level words and sentences, the author has made an effort to ensure students’ successful development from basics to essay writing skills.
You might wish to change the grading rubrics on pages 27-8.
Sections 3 focuses on Summary-Response Writing, which is uncommon in any of our academic writing books. There are good examples and exercises in this section which can help students develop better writing skill in general. However, the practicality of this section for in our courses can be doubted unless the summary or response expands into an essay.
The book covers both compound and complex sentence structure followed by good examples and useful exercises. [section 4]
Section 5 is where actual essay writing lesson begins. This section has great information, examples, and exercise. Both students and teachers will find this section absolutely beneficial in learning and teaching how to write essays.
Section 6: Process Analysis Writing doesn’t include academic examples and can be slightly confusing for students. This section teaches how to write essays that show a process such as recipes or manuals; however, academic topics that may require this style are very limited. A useful portion of this section is the list of transition words. Problem-solution or cause-effect essays could have been a lot more useful here.
Section 7 offers useful information about punctuation that can help many students. It also discusses independent/independent clauses, and revisits FANBOYS.
Section 8 (Descriptive Writing) is one of the best units which offers detailed lessons on writing descriptive essays, and includes practical examples and exercises. This chapter will be very useful for any writing student.
Section 9 has an interesting approach to teaching comma rules which is very effective and very thorough. The method is 6 examples for different situations where comma is used followed by 6 parts exercises.
