GCC LIBRARY WORKSHOP - Using Library Catalogs

Welcome! What is a library catalog?

  • An electronic index (list) of everything held by a library
  • Use it to find...
    • Books
    • eBooks
    • CDs, DVDs, atlases, special items

1. Exercise I
Follow handout instructions to learn what the GCC Library has about how superheroes and comic books reflect social challenges in American history.

Each book has its own unique Call Number to help you find it on the shelf. Let's say you find an interesting book in the library catalog, and it shows you the following location information:

On the library's Upper Level, you see aisles with the following signage. In which aisle do you think you'd locate the book?

2. Exercise II
Follow handout instructions to learn what the
Los Angeles Public Library has about the same topic.

  • The Los Angeles Public Library system has 72 library branches spread throughout the City of Los Angeles
  • The closest branches to GCC include the Eagle Rock branch and the Atwater Village branch
  • You can get a library card to check-out books and use the LAPL databases for free! All you need is proof that you live in California.

3. What did you learn today? Please complete a short Post-Quiz.
