FIT TIP #1: Good News for Fidgeters : sit less and move more for health!

Does sitting in front of your computer screen all day put you in a daze? It could also be doing a number on your metabolism too. Research suggests that sitting for long periods of time - even if you exercise regularly – could have negative effects on your cholesterol, blood sugar and body mass levels. And one study even shows that people who move around more during their day tend to have smaller waists!

Besides opting for a standing desk (or even one with a treadmill) what can you do to stave off the office chair syndrome? Consider taking occasional breaks throughout the day to visit the restroom, drink water, pick up your mail or talk to your colleague in person (more personal than an email to boot). Walk around the classroom as you lecture (and of course gesture emphatically). Did you park in lot C? Take the stairs instead of the overcrowded elevator. Although this isn’t enough exercise to justify skipping exercise, it definitely adds up to better overall health in the long run.

Now, I won’t go so far as to suggest we turn the Guild meeting into a walking meeting – but will anyone mind if I do jumping jacks while I’m waiting in line for pizza?
