Chaparral 2017-2018: 26.5 Classified Council Notes

Classified Council Notes

Classified Council President

Soroptimists presentationEarlier this month, we had the opportunity to co-sponsor an event with Soroptimists International of Glendale on the subject of human trafficking. “Human Trafficking: A Survivor’s Story” featured speakers from CAST (Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking) who provided information about the different types of human trafficking and its devastating effects. Survivors told their harrowing stories, giving the audience a glimpse of the anguish they endured in captivity and how they got out.

We again wish to thank the guest speakers, event moderator and Glendale City Councilmember Paula Devine and Soroptimists International of Glendale for bringing this unique presentation to us.

Classified Council has two new board members who were selected by the executive board to fill vacancies. They are Susan Moran and Linda Perry. We welcome them to our board and know that both will add enthusiasm and support for all of our endeavors.

Classified Employees Week will again include two events sponsored by Classified Council during the week of May 21 to 25. Our popular Classified Employees Week Basketball Game is scheduled for Thursday, May 24 in the Verdugo Gym from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. Come cheer on your fellow employees in this very competitive game. If you are interested in playing on the team, please contact Austin Kemie at akemie@glendale.edu. We will also be holding Bingo games during that week with a date TBA. Keep an eye out for the announcement.

Get ready for the Classified Council Picnic! We are moving the event from the Student Center, where it had been held for the last few years, to the new Culinary Arts dining area. The event is June 6 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the Culinary Arts Patio at the Sierra Vista Building. The picnic is free to current Classified Council members and $10 for non-members. The highlight of the event is the presentation of the Student Worker Scholarship Awards. The call for scholarship applications is coming soon. You can RSVP for the picnic right now. Go to www.glendale.edu/classifiedcouncil to submit the RSVP and check the status of your membership if needed.
