Welcome Back

I would like to welcome everyone back to Glendale College for the Fall 2017 semester and wish all of you an enjoyable and satisfying year.

I am writing this article for the September 2017 edition of Chaparral as part of my duties as the 2nd Vice President of the Glendale College Guild, or in other words the Adjunct Vice President of the Glendale College Guild.

My name is Brian Reff, and I am in the beginning of my twelfth year as an adjunct here at Glendale. I teach in the Departments of Culinary Arts and Hotel and Restaurant Management. Among the other things I do here at Glendale College, I serve on the Negotiations Team and am involved with the GCC Food for Thought Pantry. I also served in the Academic Senate as a Long Term Proxy for 5 Semesters.

If you have any questions, concerns, ideas or wish to meet with me, please send me an email: BREFF@Glendale.edu.

Brief Update

A brief update on our semester so far!

Negotiations are continuing. We have gotten some good stuff and are hoping to get more!

We had our first Guild Meeting on Tuesday, September 19. The meeting was well attended, but we needed more adjuncts to be in attendance.

We had our Fall Adjunct Guild Meeting on Saturday, September 23, and it was a great informational meeting where we learned about:

  • Upcoming Events
  • Membership Drive
  • Updating your contact information on the New Blue Forms

Brief Report

A brief report on the Saturday, September 23, Adjunct Guild Meeting:

If you missed this meeting you missed an extremely informative meeting. We had three speakers besides me, and they were all much better than me!

Our first speaker was Lara Kartalian, our Flex Coordinator. Lara gave us a truly phenomenal presentation. She guided us through the process and the website, and she answered many, many tough questions. The people who attended have contacted me to tell me, “What an outstanding job Lara did!” or to tell me, “That was the best presentation I have ever seen at a guild meeting!”

Our second speaker was Paul Vera, the Guild’s Grievance Officer. Paul gave us an outstanding presentation on Office Hours:  the how, where and why! The attendees told me that they learned a lot. Paul also answered many, many extremely difficult questions on Office Hours!

Our third and last speaker (yes, we ran out of time) was Caroline DePiro, the Guild’s Chief Negotiator. Caroline gave an update on the current state of our negotiations. The attendees were very impressed and stayed late to hear the report and to have their questions answered.

With all of that being said, I would like to thank you all for reading this and to wish you a fantastic fall semester!

Respectfully yours,

Brian Reff
