Be Your Own Work of ART

One of my favorite classes I took at a community college was life-drawing. Not at all related to my major, (at least on paper) but my transfer school wasn’t accepting new students until the Fall and I had a virtually empty Spring semester. I loved drawing and painting since I was a kid, but especially drawing people. Perhaps no surprise when the professor pointed out that I routinely added more muscles to the drawings than our models came in with. It’s probably a good think I continued my career in Kinesiology!

The human body is a complex and fascinating piece of art. And so is movement. Certainly, we can envision a dancer’s lithe contortions as art, but I would argue that sport and exercise are too. Rising to the challenge of performing near-perfect technique, overcoming the odds of opponent or self, repetition, flow and coordination; all of this is a form of self-expression. A stress-reducing, strength-producing, and yes of course – a physique sculpting art form.

JOIN THE FALL 2018 ACTIVITY CHALLENGE!
5 weeks: October 1st through November 11th

Compete to achieve your weekly physical activity goals for fun and prizes! Recruit your coworkers (even your boss!) and your whole team could win! Join any time up until the last week! 

  • Gather a few friends (min 2 people, max 6 people)
  • Register your team and nominate your team captain.
  • Select your individual goal:
    • 1. Achieve 10,000 steps/day for 5 days of the week (track using a smartphone app, fitbit or pedometer).
       OR
    • 2. Achieve 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous (must get you out of breath) exercise/week (see tracker form)
      OR
    • 3. Earn 300 MEPs (MYZONE Effort Points) per week
       
  • Track your activity and submit it at the end of the week to your team captain, or simply use your MYZONE heart rate monitor and watch the MEPs rack up!

 

RULES:

You may only register with one team, but you can also register for just the individual competition.

  • Each team that reaches their weekly goals will be entered in a weekly prize raffle.
  • Each individual will be entered in a grand prize raffle for each week their goal was reached (max 5 entries).

You must sign the liability waiver and pre-activity assessment.Physical activity can be done on campus via the Wellness Program workshops or on your own. Activity done on the weekends also counts!

To turn in your physical activity for each week (Mon-Sun) and be entered in the raffle, please email your screen shot or tracker form to erinc@glendale.edu by 7pm on the following Monday, or leave the form in my campus mailbox. Raffle winners will be drawn on Tuesday.

Week #2: Oct. 8 - Oct. 14
Week #3: Oct. 15 - Oct. 21
Week #4. Oct. 22 - Oct. 28
Week #5. Oct. 29 - Nov. 4
Week #6. Nov. 5- Nov. 11
